DESIGN & CONSTRUCT
174 King St, Newtown 2042
From public bar to comedy room, one venue, completely reimagined.
The Newtown Hotel has recently completed Stage 1 of its Design & Construct transformation, delivering a multi-level hospitality upgrade designed to increase capacity, improve flow, and elevate the guest experience—without losing its soul. This wasn’t a cosmetic refresh; it was a strategic rethink of how the venue functions, ensuring every design decision enhances trade, dwell time, and overall atmosphere.
On the ground floor, the public bar has been fully refreshed with new finishes, furniture, styling, and custom hand painted signage by Ann Woo, while the amenities have been completely refurbished with bespoke wallpaper designs. The gaming room has been extended, doubling its footprint and integrating a dedicated smoking zone. The beer garden has been reworked with refurbished furniture, thoughtful landscaping, and a bold external mural, creating a lively and inviting outdoor space. The K-Town Korean Kitchen & Bar received a full internal fit-out with custom signage and wall art, and the pool room was upgraded with improved lighting and signage to enhance the guest experience.
Level 1 focuses on atmosphere, comfort, and flexibility. The feature stairwell mural by Scotty Marsh creates a striking arrival moment, setting the tone for the spaces above. The bistro has been upgraded with banquette seating, partitions, lighting, and a custom mural created in collaboration with Golden Tiger, offering an Instagram-ready moment for guests. The Caravan Room has been reworked with new seating, carpet, lighting, and custom wall art, while the amenities across this level have been fully refurbished. The function and lounge rooms have been restyled with new furniture, lighting, and artwork, and the kitchen has been refreshed with custom wall joinery and a repaint, improving both aesthetics and functionality.
On Level 2, the comedy room has been extended to increase patron capacity, complemented by new furniture, curtains, and finishes to complete the upgrade. Each change was carefully considered to enhance performance, circulation, and overall patron experience without compromising the character of the venue.
This transformation delivers clear benefits for operators. Capacity has been increased without losing the venue’s soul, while smarter zoning now allows different patron types to enjoy the space comfortably. Every design decision has been tied directly to trade and dwell time, ensuring the upgrade drives commercial outcomes. With one team responsible for both design and construction, risk and downtime were minimised, providing a seamless project delivery.
“A business that delivers visions.”
